Dr. Michael H. Gavin

The legacy of President Emeritus Dr. Michael H. Gavin

Dr. Michael H. Gavin joined Delta College as its fifth president in 2021, bringing more than 20 years of experience at the community college level and national recognition for his leadership in academic excellence and equity practices.

In early interviews, he shared the college’s focus on student success and diversity is what initially drew him here. “I truly believe that community colleges have a role in delivering on the American promises of equity and social justice.”

Dr. Gavin is a Chicago native with a doctorate in American studies from the University of Maryland in College Park, a master’s degree in literature from American University in Washington, D.C. and a bachelor’s degree in literature from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

From the beginning, he was clear that one of the main goals of the college would be to eliminate student equity gaps and provide a place for inclusiveness. He remained steadfast in achieving these goals throughout his tenure, establishing a data-driven strategic plan called, The Way Forward.

Dr. Gavin often reminded faculty and staff of their commitment to student success with quotes like, “Delta College accepts the top 100% of applicants” and “It’s not whether the student is ready for college, but whether the college is ready for the student.” He worked to ensure every student felt supported from application through graduation, staying true to his inaugural promise: “You belong here.”

His unwavering commitment to the community college mission is prominent throughout his work, not only as Delta’s president, but as a model for institutions of higher education across the country. Whether he was serving on national or local boards or giving a keynote address on navigating national and local issues — Dr. Gavin reminded us that community colleges have the capacity to reshape inequities in society.

Dr. Gavin departed in December 2025 to serve as the inaugural president of the Alliance for Higher Education, where he works to support institutions across the nation, including Delta College.
