Applicability
Email is the primary mode of communication to Delta College (“the College”) students. Text messaging is intended to supplement the Delta College communications strategy. These Delta College Student Text Messaging Guidelines (“Guidelines”) define the college’s usage of texting and acceptable texting methods with students. These guidelines define acceptable texting practices related to ongoing, non-emergency texting use for student communications. If students, staff, or faculty would like to receive text messages in case of Delta College closures or emergencies, they may text DELTAEMG to 888777.
Text messaging across the student lifecycle
Delta College uses text messages to communicate with students about applications, account information, registration, paying for college, college deadlines, and support services. Frequency of communications will vary. Consent to receive text messages is optional and not a condition of applying, enrolling, or participating in the admissions process at Delta College.
Text messaging procedures
Each department must appoint at least one authorized official to be responsible for monitoring and approving text messaging requests on behalf of their department to ensure compliance with these guidelines.
Opt-in
Consent to receive text messages must be given by the student to the college before the college sends any text messages to the student. A student may opt-in to receive text messages at the time of application or at any time during their enrollment at the college. To receive text messages from non-essential departments, students must opt-in and provide their name and mobile number on the admission’s application. Students must also ensure their contact information held by the college is current and correct. Students who opt-in to receive text messages agree to update their account with the Registrar’s office to reflect any change to their mobile number.
If a student has elected to opt-out and wants to change their election to opt-in to receive text messages, they can reply “START” to re-subscribe and the College will start sending text messages to this student again.
Consent documentation
Methods for obtaining consent will be documented and provable if messaging activity leads to large spikes in opt-out rates or spam complaints. The college will keep a record of all opt-ins.
Messaging costs
Message and data rates may apply. When students opt-in to receive text messages, they are responsible for any carrier fees such as data plan charges, text messaging charges, tolls, out-of-area roaming, and other charges. Messaging frequency per month varies based on student status and associated actions.
Carriers
Text communications from the college may not be available through all mobile carriers. The college and mobile carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages. A carrier may prohibit or restrict certain mobile features, and certain mobile features may be incompatible with a carrier or mobile device. Students should contact their carrier with questions regarding these issues.
Opt-out and opt-out management
Students can cancel text messaging from the college at any time by texting "STOP". After a student sends the text message "STOP" to the college, they will receive a text message to confirm that they have been unsubscribed. Any student who opts-out by texting “STOP” will no longer receive text messages from the college and its departments within 14 business days. Students may text “HELP” for help.
The authorized, responsible official for each department using the institution’s texting platform will run reports regularly and update their system of record to manage student texting preferences.
Protection of information
Any information communicated to the college for text messaging purposes will be stored securely in accordance with the college’s security practices and legal regulations. It is the college’s general practice to use personal information only for the purposes for which it was requested. However, information provided to opt-in to receive text messages may be subject to Delta College’s obligation to respond to subpoenas, court orders, discovery requests, and requests for public records under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act.
We do not sell or share mobile numbers or your consent to receive text messaging with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Information may only be shared with service providers to support message delivery.
