From the Red Scare to Cancel Culture: Dissent in Democracy Now and Then

From the red scare to cancel culture dissent in democracy now and then

Join us Wednesday, March 18 from 2 - 3:30pm in the Delta College Lecture Theater (G160) for an engaging panel discussion on free expression in America.

How free is free speech—really? This thought-provoking panel discussion explores how dissent—the lifeblood of democracy—has been both celebrated and silenced across American history. From the Red Scares to today’s debates over “cancel culture,” we’ll unpack the boundaries of free expression.

Panelists will address pivotal moments when loyalty oaths, censorship and social pressure stifled speech—and ask how similar dynamics play out in our digital age. Together, we’ll examine historic persecution of those deemed “radical,” the role of the press and modern social media algorithms in defining who is heard and who is silenced, what counts as “un-American,” how fear can silence speech and how to create a culture that protects free expression.

This event is free and open to the public. For question or to request accommodations, contact Dr. Amy French, History Department professor at history@delta.edu

Panelists:

Dr. Amy French, professor of history
