Megg Cook has always had a creative side. From drawing and writing to running tabletop role-playing games, they enjoy crafting narratives and bringing ideas to life. Now, they're putting that creativity to work in a new way at Delta College.
Studying entrepreneurship and technical writing, Megg hopes to build a freelance career writing business and government contracts, with the end goal of working with NASA.
But getting here wasn't always part of the plan.
After a previous college experience left them searching for a better fit, Megg wasn't sure what to expect from Delta. They also worried that living with a disability might make continuing their education difficult.
“A big fear that I had before coming back into school and coming to Delta was that I wouldn't be capable of continuing my education,” Megg said. “But I have been able to do that, and that was a big, big, pleasant surprise for me.”
At Delta, Megg found the support and community they had been looking for. From disability services and academic advisors to student organizations, they discovered opportunities to connect with others and get involved on campus.
Through DECA, Megg helped organize fundraisers, including running a bake sale at a winter holiday craft show. They credit the Director of Athletics and Student Engagement, Alison Ginter, for encouraging them to explore new opportunities and become more involved on campus.
“It feels like being seen, which is something that you don't get everywhere,” Megg said.
Receiving a travel scholarship also gave Megg the chance to explore somewhere new and reinforced their belief in what they could accomplish.
As they continue working toward their goals, Megg hopes other students won't let past experiences keep them from trying again.
“Don't be afraid,” they said. “Just because something happened once doesn't mean it's going to happen again, and you will be surprised by how people respond to you.”
For Megg, the biggest change isn't just knowing where they want to go next. It's having the confidence and community to get there.
“I'm leaving Delta College with motivation and spirit that I lost for a long time and have been able to reclaim now that I'm at Delta.”
