Delta College dedicated the Carlyon Gym on September 11 in honor of the late Donald J. and Betty Carlyon, recognizing their decades of leadership and commitment to the college and surrounding community.
Don Carlyon joined Delta in 1960, before the college welcomed its first students or had a completed campus. He became Delta’s third employee and later served as president from 1964 until his retirement in 1992, making him the longest-serving president in college history.
Betty Carlyon played an important role at Delta. Known for her warmth and generosity, she welcomed students, employees, alumni and community members and became known as Delta’s unofficial first lady.
"Don and Betty Carlyon's example of service, generosity, hospitality and belief in the power of education will continue on," said Delta College President Dr. Michelle Allmendinger. "Their commitment is woven throughout Delta's history."
The Carlyons were also longtime supporters of Delta athletics. They regularly attended games and welcomed visiting athletes and coaches into their home, making the gym a fitting place to carry their names.
"This moment makes it particularly real," said David Carlyon. "Mom and dad are being honored by this powerhouse of presidents, by the board, by the faculty and staff, by the community."
The tribute ensures the Carlyons’ legacy will remain connected to Delta students and the college they helped shape for generations to come.
