International Observe the Moon Night is a worldwide annual celebration of lunar observation, science and exploration. All ages are welcome to engage in fun, hands-on activities, demonstrations, a live planetarium show and telescope observation from the best view in Downtown Bay City—the planetarium rooftop.
The festivities begin at 6pm in the Grand Atrium Lobby with activity tables and demonstrations. At 7pm, move to the Dome360 Theater for an immersive presentation about the Moon that guides visitors through the lunar surface features and highlights current space missions. Viewing on the observation deck (weather permitting) begins at 8pm.
"This is the 15th anniversary of International Observe the Moon Night, a public campaign to celebrate and observe Earth’s companion," explains Mike Murray, planetarium Manager. "The event was established shortly after the launch of NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which is celebrating its 15th year in orbit around the moon. The spacecraft is still working to gather the most detailed images of the moon’s surface ever taken and has revealed many surprises about the geology and composition of our nearest celestial neighbor, including the discovery of water ice."
Although the sky-observing portion of the event is weather dependent, the indoor shows and activities will run rain or shine. This event is free and open to the public.
