Delta College program spotlight: Computer Aided Design (CAD)

If you like computers, architecture or engineering, and have an acute attention to detail, CAD may be the career path for you.

What is computer aided design (CAD) and why is it important?

The design process is a crucial step in the production of a part or product. CAD creates digital 2D drawings or 3D models of real-world objects to help with visualization before the objects are physically produced. This process is often used by engineers, architects, manufacturers and more to produce innovative and high-quality products. CAD has eliminated the need for manual drafting of designs and has streamlined workflows, reduced errors and increased productivity.

“Everything starts with design,” says, Steve Gormley, professor. “If you can’t design the part, then how are you going to make it?”

Why choose Delta?

Under the guidance of experienced faculty members, you'll gain hands-on experience creating blueprints, prototyping, 3D printing and more with state-of-the-art equipment and computer drafting software technology. Small class sizes ensure you’ll receive the one-on-one attention you deserve so you’ll leave the program feeling prepared and confident for a career in computer aided design.

“We have top-of-the-line 3D printers, we have a top-of-the-line machine shop, top-of-the-line welders, and we’re trained to use all these things,” says Tyler Dillard, student. “When we go out into the workplace, we’re using the same stuff in the field that we use here at school.”

Throughout the program, you’ll also have several opportunities to take industry recognized software certification exams to earn additional professional certifications, including the Autodesk Certified User (ACU) for AutoCAD, the Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) and the Certified SolidWorks Professional (CSWP).
