Delta College is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) from September 15 – October 15 with a series of themed events to recognize the incredible contributions, cultural influence and historical impact of Hispanic and Latino communities.
Thursday, October 3 from 6 – 7:30pm, Latino Leaders for the Enhancement of Advocacy and Development (LLEAD) and Delta College will co-host a Latina Leadership Panel in Pioneer Gym. Moderated by Dr. Elsa Olvera, a panel of Latina women will engage in a live discussion sharing their experiences in leadership in local, state and national contexts.
There will be time for an audience Q&A and for guests to enjoy refreshments. RSVP to ensure adequate seating and to request accommodations.

Executive Director of AMANDLA and a Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan representative
As a Detroit native of proud Puerto Rican heritage, Consuela Barber-Lopez is a cultural warrior devoted to persevering not only Puerto Rican heritage but educating all in Latinx cultural and civic leadership as well as highlighting the historic triumphs of civic activism of Metro Detroit’s immigrant communities.
Consuela is the Executive Director of AMANDLA, where she leads a solution-based Metro Detroit Anti-Human Trafficking Counsel, and Co-Director and Founder of BombaRíca Cultural Arts Organization.
As a representative of the Hispanic Latino Commission of Michigan, she strives to market the state's career development services to Michigan Hispanics, encourages initiatives to reduce the high school dropout rates of Hispanic youth and facilitates efforts to increase the enrollment of Hispanics in postsecondary education and training programs.

Contracting officer at devense Logistics Agency (DLA) EnergyMaryLee Huerta is a contracting officer with DLA Energy. MaryLee brings a diverse educational background to the contracting field with a Master of Business Administration in contracts and acquisition from American Public University and a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with a minor in radio and television production from the University of Michigan.
MaryLee is certified in contracting at Level III under the Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA). Her expertise aligns with the goals of Executive Order 14057, focusing on sustainability and energy efficiency in government contracting.

Somons Hispanos host and LLEAD Saginaw ChairChristiana Malacara is a Delta College and Western Michigan University alumna with a passion for community development, fostering a growth mindset and advocating for marginalized segments of society. As the Chair for LLEAD Saginaw, she plays a pivotal role in shaping the educational landscape of the community.
Christiana’s leadership extends to a board position of MI ALMA, a statewide organization where her advocacy for inclusivity and empowerment finds a platform. She is also involved with the Young Professionals Network (YPN) and serves on the Steering Committee at the Saginaw Chamber of Commerce, actively contributing to the growth and professional development of the younger demographic in the community.
Christiana envisions a community where every individual, regardless of background, has access to opportunities for growth and learning. Through her roles and affiliations, Christiana strives to create a more inclusive and equitable society.

Dr. Lisa Garcia will lead a discussion on imposter syndrome and the impact on latino/a communities. Dr. Garcia brings a wealth of experience to the discussion including research in this area and leadership across the state and in higher education.
October 10, 5 – 7pm at Downtown Saginaw Center
