Program Overview

Network Administration

As a network administrator, you will manage communication systems to ensure information is flowing properly within an organization. Job responsibilities include installing and supporting an organization’s network system, monitoring the network to ensure availability to all system users, network security, installing applications, testing and distributing software upgrades, monitoring daily activity, enforcing licensing agreements, developing a storage management program and providing backups and disaster recovery.

Analyze, test, troubleshoot and evaluate existing network systems, such as local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN) and Internet systems or a segment of a network system. Perform network maintenance to ensure networks operate correctly with minimal interruption.

Install, configure and support an organization's local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN) and Internet systems or a segment of a network system. Monitor network to ensure network availability to all system users and perform any necessary maintenance to support network availability. May monitor and test Web site performance to ensure Web sites operate correctly and without interruption. Assist in network modeling, analysis, planning and coordination between network and data communications hardware and software, and supervise computer user support specialists and computer network support specialists. May administer network security measures.

Design and implement computer and information networks, such as local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), intranets, extranets and other data communications networks. Perform network modeling, analysis, and planning. You also may design network and computer security measures, as well as research and recommend network and data communications hardware and software.

The Network Administration Advanced Certificate includes eleven critical network classes. You’ll learn network administration, troubleshooting, UNIX and Linux, communication skills, system & network configuration, organizational skills, technical support, problem solving, software installation, planning, Windows Server, research skills, Cisco, customer service, firewalls and other aspects of network security and project management.

An Advanced Certificate in Network administration can also prepare you for a career in cybersecurity, IT support, network architecture, database administration and web development, among others.

At the Teaching Learning Center, located in the Library, we offer tutoring on a wide variety of subjects, and help with developing study and learning skills. Most tutoring is on a walk-in basis but we do have some online tutoring options.
