Leave of Absence without Pay

Summary

When it is beneficial to the College or the individual, a leave of absence may be granted.  Such leaves will ordinarily be without salary.  An individual will be considered an employee of the College while on leave of absence and may continue benefits on a self-pay basis.

Procedures

    1. Leaves without pay are possible only when all vacation time is used.
    2. Prior to going on leave of absence, the staff member will either resign from or make interim arrangements in elective offices, Senate, ECAPS, or SSEC responsibilities.  These arrangements will be made with the approval of the respective group’s board.
    3. Employees on a leave of absence without pay will not earn retirement credit, nor will this time count towards Employee Service Awards.
    4. Employees on a leave of absence without pay will not earn sick leave, vacation leave, or holiday pay during the duration of such leave.
    5. Employees shall have the right to return to the same position held or to an equivalent position.
    6. Employees shall normally return at the same salary as in effect prior to the leave.

Employees on leave of absence will communicate, in writing, to the Human Resources Office and immediate supervisor their intention to return to the College at least one hundred twenty days prior to the expiration of the leave or one hundred twenty days prior to the commencement of their anticipated next contractual obligation at the College, whichever is later.  Persons not intending to return or not complying with these notice provisions will have their employment terminated on the final date of the leave.

Timelines

    1. Prior to being taken, the Leave of Absence must be approved by the immediate Supervisor, Administrator, Executive Staff Member, and the President; and all necessary paper work must be completed by the Human Resources Office.
    2. Staff on leave of absence will communicate, in writing, to the Human Resources Office and immediate supervisor their intention to return to the College at least one hundred twenty days prior to the expiration of the leave or one hundred twenty days prior to the commencement of their anticipated next contractual obligation at the College, whichever is later.
