Program Overview

Delta's Clinical Medial Assistant Advanced Certificate provides the skills needed to perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the offices of physicians and other health practitioners running smoothly. Medical office staff members must have strong communication skills, organizational ability, computer knowledge and excellent human relations skills.

Medical assistants also work alongside physicians, mainly in outpatient or ambulatory care facilities, such as medical offices and clinics. Medical assistants are responsible for taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination and assisting the physician during the examination.

Perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing and coding information for insurance purposes. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood and administering medications as directed by a physician.

Perform secretarial duties using specific knowledge of medical terminology and hospital, clinic or laboratory procedures. Duties may also include scheduling appointments and billing patients, as well as compiling and recording medical charts, reports and correspondence.

This certificate has a common core of classes that is also required for the Medical Administrative Assistant Associate in Business Studies Degree. Those core classes include HSC 105, HSC 205, OAT 116 and OAT 151.
