February 6, 2018
On Friday, March 9 at 7pm the Delta College Planetarium and the Sunset Astronomical Society will host a special talk by Craig Whitford from Michigan State University about meteorites of Michigan. Whitford is the Meteorites Collection Coordinator at the university’s Abrams Planetarium in East Lansing and is leading the effort to put up a major exhibition there in 2019 thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The program will focus on meteorite finds from across the state, including the most
recent specimens from the January 16, 2018 fireball explosion near Hamburg Township. Whitford
will also discuss the characteristics to look for in determining if a particular rock
is a meteorite or “meteor-wrong.” A question and answer period will be included.
The program will be held in the Dome360 Theater of the Delta College Planetarium &
Learning Center beginning at 7pm. Admission is free and open to the public.
“Michigan Meteorites” is sponsored by the Sunset Astronomical Society as a part of
its monthly meeting starting at 7pm, March 9 in the Planetarium Theater. Admission
is free and all ages are welcome. For more information go to the planetarium’s website
