Beginner motorcyclists can get a head start on learning the basics of riding by enrolling in a 20-hour safety course at Delta College.

The Motorcycle Safety program includes online safety training, classroom learning and practicing on motorcycles on the college’s main campus. Successful completion of the course will allow riders to waive the skills and knowledge test requirement to obtain a motorcycle endorsement.

Half of all motorcycle fatalities in Michigan involve riders who are not properly licensed, according to statistics from Michigan State Police and the Office of Highway Safety Planning.

Michigan law requires a motorcycle endorsement on a driver’s license to legally ride a motorcycle on the state’s roadways. It is a misdemeanor to ride a motorcycle without the endorsement and can result in points on a driving record and fines up to $300, according to MSP.

Registration is available for sessions in April through August, during the week or on the weekend. The fee is $50; Delta provides the motorcycles.

Delta has provided the safety course for 18 years, with more than 500 people who enroll each year. The program is supported by a state grant administered by the Michigan Department of State and federal funds from Michigan Office Highway Safety and Planning.
