Three individuals from Delta College have been selected to receive a national award that recognizes exceptional teaching and leadership.

Janet Alexander, professor of English; Loyce Brown, director of Employee Development and the Equity & Title IX coordinator; and Daisy McQuiston, professor of nursing; are recipients of the 2021-2022 League Excellence Award, presented by the League for Innovation in the Community College.

The award recipients were nominated by Delta College President Dr. Mike Gavin. They will be recognized at the virtual 2022 Innovations Conference in late February.

Alexander, who began teaching at Delta in 2000, enjoys watching students start to believe in themselves.

“Often, students are unsure about their writing skills. By the end of the course, they see their improvement, and they know their new skills will benefit them beyond their English class,” said Alexander.

She said she wants her students to believe she’s on their team. If students require extra help, extra resources or a pep talk, they can count on her.

Brown joined the college in 2012 and wants people to feel empowered to overcome their challenges and reach their goals.

“I support and educate students, faculty and staff at some of the most vulnerable points in their education or career,” Brown said. “When they walk away from an interaction with me I want them to feel they can make the adjustments necessary to become their best self.”

McQuiston joined Delta in 2005. In addition to her role as an educator, she’s been highly involved with Delta’s COVID-19 vaccination clinics. In both roles, she said every interaction is an opportunity to be kind to one another – kindness goes a long way.

About teaching, McQuiston said, “My favorite thing about my job is interacting with the students and seeing the “ah ha” moments in their learning. It warms my heart and keeps me coming back for more.”
