Delta College recognized as a top athletics program in Michigan

June 15, 2021

After a year of success in sports, Delta College has claimed its first-ever Charlie Chanter All-Sports Trophy from the Michigan Community College Athletic Association.

The trophy is awarded to a college with the highest average of points for the school year. Delta took first place, with Grand Rapids Community College and Muskegon Community College in second and third place, respectively.

Dionne McCollum, director of Athletics and Student Athlete Development, said the recognition represents years of hard work and dedication by coaches and student athletes.

“This honor breaks the stigma that junior college athletes aren’t smart enough or good enough to play at any level, however, they found their home at Delta and broke the stereotypes,” McCollum said. “Our student athletes are competitors and extremely talented. It’s an extreme honor to receive the MCCAA All-Sports Trophy.”

The trophy is culmination of a year of success on the court, field and green. Delta claimed the MCCAA women’s soccer title, the MCCAA North women’s basketball championship and tied for the MCCAA North men’s basketball championship. The golf team finished second in the MCCAA Eastern Conference.
