Delta College recently launched two new certificate programs for individuals who want to advance their careers in data science – an emerging field – and accounting.
The programs, which will be available fall 2021, address the growing need for specific skillsets in these areas. The programs were designed to build upon existing skills for working professionals or college graduates with an associate’s degree or higher.
“These new programs were developed in direct response to needs shared by local employers and people seeking opportunities to develop specialized skills,” said Stephanie Harrison, dean of Career Education and Learning Partnerships. “It’s necessary to offer these types of opportunities for individuals who want to advance their careers and for graduates who want to have a higher level of employability.”
Classes in both programs will be offered in a variety of formats, including online, in-person and hybrid.
The data science advanced certificate, one of the first to be offered in Michigan, will prepare students for any job that calls for a junior data scientist or related position in the areas like institutional research and human resources.
Harrison said the need for data scientists is on the rise with many organizations, hospitals and businesses using data in its day-to-day operations to make informed and strategic decisions.

The 29-credit accounting certificate program will introduce advanced accounting concepts, including data analytics. The certificate is also a fast-track program, which means it’ll take one year to complete from start to finish.
