COVID-19 updates, tips on overcoming cabin fever, and a review of a new movie are just some of the stories featured in the first-ever mini version of the Delta Collegiate, Delta College’s student-run newspaper.
The six-page Mini-Collegiate that was published on March 23 can be viewed at https://bit.ly/3duvCcc. Future issues will be published every Monday.
Editor-in-Chief Patrick Sochacki said he wants to keep the Delta community connected despite disruption of the newspaper’s typical biweekly, printed version, which came to a temporary pause when Delta College closed buildings March 16 due to an emergency order by Gov. Whitmer.
“We want to keep engaging our readers with the familiarity of a print newspaper,” Sochacki said. “We opted to make a shorter copy every week so students could see us regularly. Since we can’t stuff it in students’ mailboxes, we’re sending out the digital version.”
The mini issues will include a mix of local and Delta College news, as well as arts and entertainment, science and health, opinion pieces and student submissions. Sochacki said the team will work to keep readers up-to-date on breaking COVID-19 news.
“We offer a platform for students, staff and faculty to share their voice and we want our readers to remember that we’re here for them,” he said.
Sochacki, a broadcast media major from Essexville, said the newspaper staff is adjusting its workflow accordingly. The team is using a video application to have story pitch meetings and plan future issues, and team members are using a file-sharing app to manage stories.
