A special event for recent Delta College graduates will take place June 20 at 1pm on the college’s main campus.

Cruise-in Commencement invites students and their family members to drive through campus in their vehicles to celebrate, take photos and pick up diploma covers, while maintaining safe distances. Delta College President Dr. Jean Goodnow and faculty members will greet students, and several locations around campus will be reserved for photos and other activities. 

The June event was planned in response to the May 1 commencement ceremony that was canceled due to the coronavirus crisis. In April, a team of faculty and staff members came together to plan an alternative opportunity to celebrate students.

“I cannot wait to congratulate our recent graduates at this special and unique event,” said Goodnow. “They had to quickly adapt to our changing world, and the least we can do is adapt to provide a much-deserved celebration of their accomplishments and future. Just as I would on stage at commencement, I look forward to handing each student their diploma cover – this year with my Delta face mask and gloves.”

Goodnow will hand out diploma covers on the south side of campus, by the bus drop-off zone. Students should be seated in the passenger side of their vehicles, and as each car stops, the student’s name and degree will be announced live on Delta’s radio station, WUCX-FM 90.1.

The event will also be streamed live on Delta’s Facebook page, and families are encouraged to decorate their vehicles.

The event invites any student who was eligible to attend the May 1 commencement ceremony; students will soon receive an email invitation with more details. Delta’s Trustees, faculty and staff members are also invited to attend the event.
