November marks the 50th anniversary of the second manned landing on the Moon by astronauts Pete Conrad and Alan Bean. The Delta College Planetarium will celebrate the occasion with "The Incredible Journey of Apollo 12," a special live in-house production on Friday, November 1 at 7pm in the Dome360 Theatre.
Produced and presented by Planetarium Show Specialist Brian Kennedy, the program celebrates the accomplishment through fulldome immersive imagery, actual audio recordings, rarely seen footage and photography. The show will graphically demonstrate how the mission took place, including some of the scarier moments when the Saturn V rocket carrying the astronauts was struck by lightning soon after liftoff. Other highlights include its precision landing on the Moon near Surveyor 3, and unmanned spacecraft that landed almost three years earlier. Audiences can enjoy the lighter moments too as Kennedy shares stories about one of the most comical crews to land on the Moon.
A number of exhibits about the Apollo Program are still on display in the planetarium’s atrium lobby, including a 15-foot tall Saturn V rocket, Apollo moon suit replica, mission flags and video.
Tickets for "Apollo 12" are specially priced at $3 per seat and go on sale at the planetarium one hour before show time.
