For the seventh year in a row, Delta College was declared a Military Friendly School by Victory Media. This designation is awarded to the top universities and community colleges in the country that are dedicating resources to ensure military students are successful both in the classroom and after graduation.
In addition, Delta College was awarded Michigan Veteran-Friendly Gold Status for 2018-19 by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency. The agency awards Bronze, Silver and Gold level status to schools that offer veteran-centric services and programs.
"It’s a great honor to receive these distinctions," said Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Retired Andrew Ornelas, the Veterans Coordinator and Head Softball Coach at Delta College. "Veterans gave a large portion of their lives to serve our great country. So, it’s a privilege for my staff and me to provide them with the best support they deserve."
Delta College’s Veteran Services works with around 200 student veterans and their dependents each semester, along with more veterans attending Delta who are saving their GI bills for later degrees, supplying them with continuous support and advice.
"Delta College is here for veterans," said Ornelas. "We have a passion for supporting veteran students and make sure we do this to the best of our abilities so the veterans’ transitions into the school environment goes as smoothly as possible."
Delta will be showcased along with other 2018-19 Military Friendly Schools in the annual Guide to Military Friendly Schools and on www.militaryfriendly.com.
Delta has two big upcoming events this semester for veteran students.
During the Delta Women’s and Men’s Basketball games on Monday, February 25 at 5:30pm and 7:30pm, Veterans Appreciation Night will recognize student veterans and have a Military Drill Team perform at both halftimes.
On the same day as the Delta Job Fair, Thursday, March 21, Delta will also have a Veterans Expo. Times for this event are still to be announced.
