In 1982, the original commission to investigate the need for an Honors Program came from President Don Carlyon. A college-wide committee met regularly for two years to determine the feasibility of a program, considering several two-year and four-year models. Eventually a program model that draws on the strengths evident at other institutions and also has features unique to Delta, such as the use of Honors Options, was implemented by a team put together by the Vice President for Instruction. An Honors Advisory Board, which consists of administrators, elected faculty, and community representatives, was established to oversee the program. The program officially began in the Fall of 1986 under the guidance of Carolyn Gruenberg Wirtz with 7 classes, 6 instructors, and 55 students. Honors Directors to follow were Fred "Skip" Renker, Drew Colenbrander, Jennifer Bishop, Marie Faulk, and Julia Fogarty.
