Letter from the Delta College Foundation Chair

Herb SpenceWelcome to Delta’s spring issue of Journeys!

As Chair of the Delta College Foundation’s Board of Directors, I’m pleased to have the opportunity to serve the college and to help let our community know about some of the great things happening at Delta through this publication. You will see the Foundation is welcoming five new members to the board this year, as we also celebrate two great leaders who retired from our group last December. It has been a busy winter semester as Delta’s president, Dr. Michael Gavin, welcomed guests to his official inauguration and presided over his first commencement – our first in-person ceremony since 2019.

This edition has great stories on some of our current students, as well as past graduates and memorial scholarship endowments. We also recap a meeting with Andrew Liveris, Dow’s former president, when he met students and educators at Delta’s Downtown Midland Center. The impact Delta has on their lives is tremendous.

As we head into the spring, we are welcoming a new STEM Explorer coordinator, supported by a recent GM Powertrain corporate contribution. We are also excited that the Great Lakes Bay Region will be hosting an international conference of STEM Learning Ecosystems. Delta is hosting one of the breakout sessions at its Downtown Midland Center, which highlights our leadership in science, technology, engineering and math education.

This summer, the college will complete a renovation of its Public Media Center, which houses its TV and radio stations (WDCQ-TV and WUCX-FM) and includes spaces for the journalism and electronic media academic programs. This renovated area will offer an up-to-date environment for staff and students involved in the creation of media and communication.

We have also been honored over the past year to have enjoyed strong support from our alumni, contributors and community supporters. We hope you enjoy this issue of Journeys and we are confident that our current and future accomplishments will make you proud to be a Pioneer!
