'For our future': Couple's passions merge in new scholarship

Scott Seeburger first became interested in sustainability about 40 years ago.

It was the early ‘80s in Midland. The now-retired Dow Corning employee was asked to lead the creation of the company’s first environmental report, which was around the same time the idea was gaining traction around the world.

Scott and Sandy Seeburger“The concept of environmental sustainability makes a lot of sense because there is a great need for us to consider the long-term consequences of our actions,” said Scott. “We must think of how our lifestyles affect our planet.”

A love for Earth, education and their community led Scott and his wife Sandy to establish a new scholarship at Delta College. The Scott and Sandra Seeburger Family Scholarship Endowment will support students in a variety of fields and programs, including science and engineering, water environmental technology and wind turbine technology.

“It’s our little way of trying to lighten the load for students so they can focus on making our planet more survivable,” said Scott, who is also a Delta alumnus.

The recycling and reuse enthusiasts deeply value education. During her 34-year career as a speech therapist, Sandy worked with hundreds of students at St. Charles Community Schools.
Scott has also worked in media, including Delta College Public Media, and much of his community work has focused on supporting young people.

“You come in contact with a lot of like-minded, young individuals who want to aim higher,” said Scott. “Colleges add a lot to the community and I’ve always been impressed with Delta’s upbeat and encouraging energy.

Delta has made a true difference in the lives of many people, so this is our way of giving back.”
