New sculpture unveiled at Downtown Saginaw Center
At the Downtown Saginaw Center, a new outdoor sculpture stands tall at about seven feet. It’s remarkable. It makes a statement. And it’s very special.
The public art piece, made of bronze, features a male and female student, both looking forward toward a door that symbolizes opportunity. Titled, “Preparing for Success – Opportunity,” the sculpture is the newest piece to join Delta College’s Sculpture Walk.
“This sculpture represents Delta’s dedication to putting a college education within reach of all community members,” said President Emeritus Dr. Jean Goodnow. “I hope it inspires everyone to consider their dreams and how they can rise up to achieve them.”
The sculpture, located on the northeast side of the building, was celebrated August 5 during a formal dedication ceremony. The event was attended by community members, trustees, donors and supporters, including Mike and Sarah Jury, who underwrote the cost for the sculpture.
Mike Jury said he hopes the art piece serves as a gathering space for students – a
place to ponder, rest
or study.
“No matter what program a student is in, from welding to healthcare to business, we hope students see themselves in this sculpture and know that opportunity is there for them,” said Jury, from Saginaw.
Idaho-based artist, Ken Newman, created the sculpture with input from about 750 Delta students who helped shape the concept for the piece. The granite seating area that surrounds the statue was funded by the Patricia L. and Robert W. Grant, Jr. Endowment through the Delta College Foundation. The Grants spent their lives in the Saginaw community, supporting its people and advancing the arts.
