Aleisha Jones had always been fascinated by how the human body works, so when she came to Delta College, she thought she would study nursing. But after taking a medical math class, she decided to explore teaching.

"I like to give knowledge to other people and show them different ways of doing things and helping them,” she says. “I just love helping people. Teaching is another way of doing that.”
It won’t come as a surprise to Aleisha’s elementary and high school teachers, who always saw the potential teacher in her.
“In elementary school, all of my teachers during conferences would say to my mom, ‘your daughter’s going to be a teacher – I hope you know that,’” she relates. “And then in high school, I had a few teachers who said, ‘You’re just amazing with people, and how you go about life is like a teacher, so you’d be great at that.’”

Aleisha also hopes to someday coach soccer, a sport she loves and plays at Delta.
“Soccer has been a very important thing in my life,” she says. “I’m very competitive and it’s been an amazing experience to be able to play at a higher level in college – playing against other very intense people. It’s really fun.”

Aleisha and her teammates have been involved in several community service events at
Delta, including an AIDS walk and a Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event.
“Being involved as a student athlete and volunteering is just something that’s very close to my heart,” she says. “I love helping other people and showing them that they’re not alone.”
She hopes her future teaching career will allow her to have a similar influence on her students.
“I hope to help them make better decisions in their life – especially high school students,” she says. “Something that would really make it for me – you know, make me think, ‘I’m really glad I did this,’ would be not necessarily just changing a kid’s life, but influencing them to do something better for somebody else.”
