Meeting the Triple Bottom Line
At Delta College, we’ve adopted the Triple Bottom Line model to lead us in making sound sustainable decisions. For many people, sustainability translates into being "environmentally friendly", but it is broader than that. It represents much more than reducing waste, protecting wildlife and recycling. The Triple Bottom Line reminds us that finance intersects with the environment and with the best interest of society. In other words, it reminds us of the connection between people, planet, and profit.
The three legged stool metaphor is often used to illustrate the interdependence of the three main aspects of sustainability. The legs represent the environmental, social, and economic factors. If the stool is to function over the long term, each leg must be of equal length. If one of the factors does not have equal consideration, the stool will fail. The closer we move to true sustainability--the centerpiece of the Triple Bottom—the more just, healthy, and prosperous we are as a society.

Delta College is proud of its heritage and progress towards developing and maintaining a campus that integrates sustainability in all of its educational, administrative, and operational activities. The mission of campus sustainability is to increase awareness and concern about how we--as individuals and as a society--impact our environment. With our educational resources and power of influence over future generations, Delta College is an ideal environment from which to live and promote sustainability.

Sustainability is open territory--there is so much to accomplish and plenty of room for innovation. Pioneers are needed at all levels who can make important contributions and have a profound impact on our future. We encourage you to expand your awareness of sustainability on campus and throughout the communities in which you live, work, and play. We invite you to become an active participant.
