Process Operations Management

CPI 260W

Course Description

Prerequisite: CPI 240 and CPI 250 with a grade of "C" or better. Provides capstone experience for chemical process operation students/technicians. Focuses on demonstrated student skills in the use of control charts; P&ID's; verification of systems, units, and equipment; and development of critical values for SPC. Provides opportunity for students to present plans (including PSM and environmental management systems) and procedures for start-up and run, shut down operations, and present results of pilot project run. Emphasizes the value and function of the team in process operations as well as quality control, and environmental health and safety issues (45-45)

Outcomes and Objectives

Operate a simulated chemical process.

Objectives:

  • Verify systems/units/equipment in operation during the pilot project.
  • Document procedures for start-up and shut down of operations.
  • Present results of pilot project run both orally and in written reports.
  • Work with other groups (teams) to maintain quality, safety, and to successfully operate a chemical process.

Understand chemical process operations management concepts.

Objectives:

  • Use control charts and P&ID's during operation of the pilot project operation.
  • Utilize process control, troubleshooting, and operation management techniques during pilot project operation.
  • Determine need for, develop, and present written plans/standard operating procedures (SOP's) including quality control, environmental management systems, and process safety management.

Operate chemical process equipment.

Objectives:

  • Operate valves during process operation/pilot project run.
  • Operate pumps during process operation/pilot project run.
  • Utilize tanks/vessels during process operation/pilot project run.
  • Conduct heat transfer operations during process operation/pilot project run.
  • Utilize steam traps and filters during process operation/pilot project run.
  • Operate process instrumentation during process operation/pilot project run.
  • Utilize chemical and unit operation concepts during process operation/pilot project run.

Maintain chemical process equipment.

Objectives:

  • Maintain valves during process operation/pilot project.
  • Maintain pumps during process operation/pilot project.
  • Maintain tanks/vessels during process operation/pilot project.
  • Maintain steam traps and filters during process operation/pilot.
  • Maintain equipment, units, and instruments during operation of pilot project.
