Establishing a Connection

Before establishing a connection, make sure that your machine is configured to automatically obtain an IP address (via DHCP). Follow the instructions for your operating system under the Wireless Ethernet Connections section. This section also includes a Troubleshooting area where some common problems can be resolved.

Troubleshooting Windows Connections

Wireless Networking: Windows 7

These instructions are for machines running Windows 7. If you haven't already done so, check to determine which version of Windows you are running before proceeding.

1.  Open Connect to a Network by clicking the network icon (Picture of the wireless network icon or Picture of the wired network icon) in the notification area.
2.  In the list of available wireless networks, click Delta Wifi, and then click Connect.
3.  Windows will prompt you about connecting to an unsecured connection, do so anyway.  You should also be prompted to choose a location (in this case Public) and if you would like to automatically connect.

Finish the wizard and configuration is complete.

Wireless Networking: Windows XP Service Pack 2

These instructions are for machines running Windows XP Service Pack 2. If you haven't already done so, check to determine which version of Windows XP you are running. Follow this step:

  1. Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop and select Properties from the pull-down menu.
  2. The Service Pack level appears on the General tab as either Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2. If you are running Service Pack 1, click here for those instructions.

These instructions assume that you are using the Windows XP menu structure, not the Classic menu structure. To edit your menu structure, right-click on the Start button, select Properties, make sure that the Start menu radio button is selected, then click OK.

  1. Select Start > Connect to > then right-click on Wireless Network Connection. Select View Available Wireless Networks from the menu. The Wireless Network Connection window appears.
  2. Select DeltaWifi and click in the checkbox to select Allow me to connect to the selected wireless network, even though it is not secure. Click Connect.
  3. A Wireless Network Connection dialog box appears. Click Connect Anyway. The wireless card lights will begin flashing and network connectivity should start within a few seconds.

Note: If your wireless card does not establish a connection, you may need to RESTART your computer.

The configuration step is complete. 

Wireless Networking: Windows XP Service Pack 1

These instructions are for machines running Windows XP Service Pack 1. If you haven't already done so, check to determine which version of Windows XP you are running. Follow this step:

  1. Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop and select Properties from the pull-down menu.
  2. The Service Pack level appears on the General tab as either Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2. If you are running Service Pack 2, click here for those instructions.

These instructions assume that you are using the Windows XP menu structure, not the Classic menu structure. To edit your menu structure, right-click on the Start button, select Properties, make sure that the Start menu radio button is selected, then click OK.

  1. Select Start > Connect to > then right-click on Wireless Network Connection. Select View Available Wireless Networks from the menu. The Wireless Network Connection window appears.
  2. Select DeltaWifi and click in the checkbox to select Allow me to connect to the selected wireless network, even though it is not secure. Click Connect.
  3. The wireless card lights will begin flashing and network connectivity should start within a few seconds.

Note: If you are not connected, you may need to RESTART your computer.

The configuration step is complete. 

Wireless Networking: Mac OS X 10.4

  1. First, you must determine which version of Mac OS X you are running. Select the Apple menu > About this Mac. The version number will be listed.
  2. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences (appears in the upper left of the screen display) and click the Network icon.
  3. Double-click Airport. On the Airport tab, set these options as follows:
    1. By default, join: Preferred Networks
    2. If CMU doesn't appear
      1. Click the (+) sign
      2. In the Network dialog box, enter DeltaWifi as a network.
      3. Wireless Security should be set to None.
    3. At the bottom of the Network dialog box, select the option to Show Airport Status in menu bar.
  4. On the TCP/IP tab:
    1. Select Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    2. Search Domains (optional): should be left blank or set to any or all of the following: delta.edu
  5. Click Apply now to register these configuration changes.
  6. Select System Preferences > Quit System Preferences.

The configuration step is complete. 

Wireless Networking: Mac OS X 10.3

  1. First, you must determine which version of Mac OS X you are running. Select the Apple menu > About this Mac. The version number will be listed.
  2. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences (appears in the upper left of the screen display) and click the Network icon.
  3. Double-click Airport. On the Airport tab, set these options as follows:
    1. By default, join: A specific network
    2. Network: DeltaWifi
    3. Deselect the option to Allow this computer to create networks
    4. Select the option for Show AirPort Status in menu bar
  4. On the TCP/IP tab:
    1. Select Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    2. Search Domains (optional): should be left blank or set to any or all of the following: delta.edu
  5. Click Apply now to register these configuration changes.
  6. Select System Preferences > Quit System Preferences.

The configuration step is complete. 

Logging On to the Wireless Internet

Using your favorite Internet browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox…), browse to any link. You will then be prompted for "Username" and "Password". Please enter the username and password that you use to connect to Delta’s wired network or to Webmail. If you do not have a user name or password you may visit the Library Learning Information Center (LLIC) to receive a temporary one.

Troubleshooting Windows Connections

Verify DHCP & DNS are set properly:

Windows XP

  1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Network Connections.
  2. Right-click Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
  3. The Wireless Network Connection Properties window appears.
  4. Select Internet Protocol ( TCP/IP), then click Properties.
  5. The Internet Protocol ( TCP/IP) Properties window appears. Verify that both the Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically radio buttons are selected.
  6. Click OK to close the open windows.

The configuration step is complete. If you are still unsuccessful, contact your wireless card manufacturer.
