2012-2013 Verification Changes

Each year, a significant percentage of students who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) are selected by the federal government for the verification process. If selected, you will be notified by the federal Processor on your student aid report (SAR). The Financial Aid Office will also send a notification to your Delta email account. This communication will include a link to the verification worksheet. The verification process must be completed before federal and some state financial aid programs can be awarded.

For the 2012-13 academic year, the federal government has made substantial changes to the verification process.

• If students (and the parents of dependent students) used the IRS Data Retrieval Process when completing the 2012-13 FAFSA and made no changes to the information that was transferred into the FAFSA, additional financial documentation may not be required. The appropriate verification form, must still be completed, signed and returned to the Financial Aid Office. If additional information is required, a request will be sent to the student's Delta email account.
  
  Note: Parents and students have the option to utilize the IRS Data Retrieval Process even if they did not do so initially. The verification worksheet provides detailed instructions. You may also view a brief tutorial that shows step-by-step instructions on how to use the IRS Data Retrieval.
• If the IRS Data Retrieval Process is not used, students (and the parents of dependent students) selected for verification must submit their 2011 IRS Tax Return Transcripts with the appropriate signed, completed verification worksheet. Personal copies of federal tax returns are no longer considered an acceptable form of documentation by the federal government. IRS Tax Return Transcripts can be requested online at www.irs.gov.
• If a student and/or the parent of a dependent student amended their 2011 federal tax return, it will be necessary to submit copies of their 2011 IRS Tax Return Transcripts AND their 2011 IRS Tax Account Transcripts with the appropriate signed completed verification worksheet. Tax Account Transcripts also can be requested online at www.irs.gov.
