Delta College students win big at DECA Regional Competition

Group of DECA students at competition. Out of the 17 students Delta College sent to compete in DECA, 16 earned a top 10 medal or a first through third place plaque. On February 2–4 students geared up for the competition and made their mark in Grand Rapids as they competed in a variety of events.

DECA is an organization that creates and prepares leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management, serving high schools and colleges globally. The organization is made up of 215,000 members, 3,500 high school chapters, 5,500 advisors and 275 collegiate chapters. Delta College is the only community college to compete in Michigan’s collegiate chapter of DECA.

“Our students did a great job competing against their peers from MSU, CMU, SVSU, Northwood University, Davenport University and other four-year universities.” said DECA advisor and Assistant Professor of Management Lori Ziolkowski. 

Students who placed are now fundraising and preparing for DECA’s international competition in April.

 The following students will head to D.C. to compete in the international competition:

  • Brock Delisle, from Saginaw studying general studies, placed first in Banking and Financial Services.
  • Chelsea Thompson, from Birch Run, studying management, placed second in Professional Sales.
  • Nick Berger, from Hemlock, in the 3+1 Northwood program studying marketing management, placed second in Emerging Technologies.
  • Sydney Hollis, from Saginaw, studying to earn an associate in arts placed second in Travel & Tourism.
  • Sydney Hollis and David Hollis from Saginaw, studying marketing management placed second in Event Planning.
  • Michael Wills, from Cass City, studying to earn an associate in arts placed third in Fashion Merchandising and Management. 
  • Jonas Halverson-Morey, from Midland, studying marketing management and Nicole Horn, from Bay City, studying general business management placed third in Marketing Communication. 
  • Michael Wills and Molly DuPuis, from Saginaw, studying general management earned a top 10 medal in Business Ethics.
  • Megan Bloomberg, from Saginaw, studying to earn an associate in arts and Jodi Butler, from Coldwater, studying to earn an associate in arts earned a top 10 medal in Event Planning.
  • Tanise Clipper, from Bay City, studying business information technologies earned a top 10 medal in Emerging Technologies.
  • Chelsea Thompson, earned a top 10 medal in Travel and Tourism.
  • Jordan Mulligan, from Essexville, studying art and design earned a top 10 medal in Fashion Merchandising and Management.
  • Aubrie Smith, from Bay City, studying general management and Jessica Sierocki, from Saginaw studying to earn an associate of arts earned a top 10 medal in Event Planning.
