Entry #1 Pre-Assessment
OVERALL Librarian Tip

Tip 1: It is good to choose a topic that interests you or something that you already know something about. However, it is also very important to choose a topic that is popular enough so that people have written a lot articles about that particular topic. This Biology 171 Research Project will make you find articles from a wide range of literature. For some topics, you can find a lot of information in magazines and newspapers intended for the general public. However, those same topics may not be of interest to professors and doctors, and therefore, you may not be able to find any information in scholarly journals for entries #6, #7, and #8. Just the opposite is true, also. Depending on your topic, you may be able to find scholarly research articles on your topic but nothing in magazines like Newsweek and Time.

For example, quite a bit of literature can be found for topics such as stem cells, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and multiple sclerosis.

For topics such as West Nile Virus, you will find some information in popular magazines, popular science magazines, and journals, but it will be difficult to find scientific journal (primary source) articles (Entry # 8).

Anthrax is another topic that we have heard a lot about. Finding information in magazines such as Newsweek is one thing. Finding scholarly research articles can be quite another thing.

Tip 2: You will be searching indexes (databases) that will lead you to magazine and journal articles. Delta Library does not have every magazine or journal listed in the indexes (databases). However, if you find some citations that look good and are not at Delta, then please ask at the Reference Desk on how you can interlibrary loan the articles for free.

NOTE: not all articles can be obtained through interlibrary loan and those articles that can be sent from other institutions will take about two weeks to arrive at Delta Library. We are at the mercy of other libraries and the U.S. Postal Service. DO NOT WAIT LONG TO COMPLETE ENTRY # 8 ASSIGNMENT.
