Instructor Absences

Guideline

Instructors are expected to meet all classes as scheduled.

Procedures

    • If an instructor anticipates an absence or is unable to meet a scheduled class, Associate Dean/division office must be contacted as soon as possible before the class to make appropriate arrangements for the missed session(s). Two options are possible:
      1. The scheduled class may be cancelled and made up later. A “goodwill” trade-off with a college-approved instructor may occur.
      2. A college approved substitute instructor, who is paid by the College for services rendered, may be scheduled to teach the class session upon approval of the appropriate supervisor.
      3. In addition to contacting his/her Associate Dean/division office, if an instructor calls Instructional Support Services in a timely manner, every attempt will be made to contact the students regarding the cancellation.
    • If the class must be cancelled, and the instructor has contacted his/her division office, the division office or ISS (Instructional Support Services) will post the cancellation notice on the classroom door.  If possible the instructor may notify their students via Delta email of course cancellation.
    • An adjunct faculty member may be absent for Associate Dean approved reasons 1/15 of class contact hours per assigned class per semester, without any reduction in pay. In the event of additional absences, the adjunct instructor will not be paid for the time missed.
