A gig with the student newspaper gave Josie the push she needed to pursue her dream job

Like many, Josie wasn’t sure what her next steps would be after she graduated high school. She loved photography since a child, however she wasn’t sure that was the best path.

"I would describe Delta as 'home' because I recognized so many people when I walked through the halls and it felt safe and this was a familiar place. And that familiarity and that safety really contributed to my learning experience."

“I looked at some four-year institutions and nothing really felt like it clicked. So, I came to Delta because I wanted some time to figure stuff out. I figured Delta was the perfect place to take a moment and work toward some general education requirements.”

It didn’t take long for Josie to see that she would find her answers and her future career at Delta.

“I chose journalism because two weeks after I started classes I found out about a photography position open at the Delta Collegiate. I did my first couple assignments and I’m like, ‘This is it. This is what I want to do.’”

Once she had her sights set on pursuing a career in photojournalism, she took advantage of every opportunity she could find. She completed a six-month internship with the Saginaw News/mLive Media Group. Not only, did she gain valuable, real-life experience in journalism, the opportunity confirmed that this was exactly what she wanted to do every day. “It was a dream,” recalls Josie.

Coming Home

After graduating from Delta, Josie moved to Nashville for an internship at a newspaper, the Tennessean. When she returned to Michigan, she transferred to Central Michigan University where she’s currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in photojournalism. And, this summer she’s heading to San Antonio to work for the San Antonio News Express.

Even though Josie has been to numerous cities since her time at Delta, she says she still feels like she is at home when she visits Delta’s campus.

“I was walking the halls today and I realized how much Delta felt like my home.”

She contributes her success at Delta and her positive experience to the encouragement she received as a student.

“Delta helped me by surrounding me with people who really believed in me and believed in my potential when I often couldn’t see it myself.”

In fact, Josie would encourage anyone that isn’t sure what their next steps are to give Delta a chance.

“Delta is a place where you can come and really explore what exactly you want to do and know that you are very much supported.”
