Young entrepreneur gets head start on college

Thanks to a budding baking company, Fatimah Khan knows exactly what she wants to do after high school.

Fatimah, founder of Chocoletzle, is getting a head start on college by taking several classes at Delta College as a dual enrollment student. The senior high school student from Midland plans to attend Central Michigan University this fall for marketing and entrepreneurship.

“My counselor suggested dual enrolling at Delta to reduce the amount of time I’m spending at school during Covid-19, but also to get a jump start on my college career,” said Fatimah. “I took her advice and I’m really glad I did.”

Fatimah wasn’t sure what to expect before she took her first Delta class – an online English course.

“It was an asynchronous class, so I could log in anytime and do my work, which has been really nice,” she said. “I just made sure I did the assignments and turned them in on time.”

An added plus, Fatimah said, has been the accessibility of her instructors.

“My professors say, ‘If you need anything at all, we’re just an email away,’ so while I haven’t met them in person, I can tell that they genuinely care about their students and their success,” she said.

Fatimah said attending Delta has not only allowed her to earn early college credit, but it has also introduced her to college life.

“I’ve learned things like how to reach out to my professor, what office hours are, how to get college books and the types of resources that are available, like the library and tutoring support,” she said.

Fatimah is a planner. You can see it in her delicious desserts and in the way she plans for her future.

“Being a college freshman is scary, but having some experience ahead of time can help take away any stress or anxiety that you might have,” she said.

She recommends dual enrolling for anyone.

“I’m enhancing the skills I’m going to need for the rest of my educational life, and even in the future,” said Fatimah. “Being a dual enrolled student has given me a really nice head start and allowed me to push myself more than what I’m used to.”

Now, for the burning question. What is Fatimah’s favorite type of dessert?

“That’s easy,” she said. “Chocolate all the way.”
