Adam finds smooth transition from high school to college

From a young age, Adam Coenis had an interest in helping people.

“I knew I wanted to do something in the medical field,” he said. “In high school, I dreamed about being a doctor, but I wasn’t sure how to get there.”

During his senior year of high school, Adam said reality set in when it was time to choose a college.

“I figured nursing would be a great starting point,” he said.

He chose Delta because the main campus was close to home, he could save money and he could work while taking classes. Plus, the scholarship he received during his second year helped too.

“I can pay for my semester tuition in one transaction, which is crazy to me,” he said.

Adam’s giving mentality led him to join the Delta chapter of Alternative Spring Break, a student organization that plans community service trips around the country. Last year, he and a group of Delta students took a road trip to North Carolina to help a nonprofit.

He said he joined the group because he wanted to meet new people, but didn’t expect to make lifelong friendships.

“There were 12 of us who packed into a van for the trip and I didn’t know a single person,” he said. “But on the way back, the last thing you would describe the trip is quiet. We all became such great friends.”

Sage advice

Adam’s advice to students who are considering Delta is simple. Well, kind of.

“I feel like I could go on and on,” he said. “Delta definitely makes for the easiest transition from high school to college. The professors are helpful and engaged, there are so many resources, plus I’m able save money by living at home and eating the meals my mom makes. Life is good.”

"Delta gave me a strong sense of security in my choice to come here and a lot of confidence in my future."

Adam’s ultimate goal is to become a nurse practitioner, and then take his skills abroad as a traveling nurse for several years.

“Delta gave me a strong sense of security in my choice to come here and a lot of confidence in my future,” he said.
