Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

How to Qualify

The VITA program is meant to provide free income tax preparation for anyone who needs it. We expect that our clients will be…anyone! Delta students, Delta staff, ordinary members of the community…anyone…can be a VITA client. The only limiting factors are discussed below.

In order for you to have your tax returns prepared at no cost by our trained volunteers, your income must be below certain levels. Generally, we will follow the income limitations provided for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). If your income is below the amount provided in the middle column below next to the number of children that you have, then you qualify! In addition, check out the credit amounts that you could qualify for in the right hand column!

EITC
Earned income less than:
Credit up to:
With no children
$19,680 $487
With 1 child
$43,210 $3,250
With 2 children
$48,378 $5,372
With 3 children
$51,567 $6,044

Child Tax Credit
Earned Income more than:
Child Tax Credit up to:
With 1 or more children
$3,000 $1,000 per child

In addition, there may be situations where we cannot prepare tax returns due to complexities for which our volunteers are not trained. We will review your materials when you arrive and let you know if any such complexities will prevent us from preparing your returns.
