Faculty Services
The Teaching/Learning Center provides services not only to students but to faculty as well, both inside and outside the classroom. We want to work with you to support student success! Click on an item in the list at right for a brief description.
Our primary service is tutoring, in content areas and in study skills. Faculty can:
- refer individual students
- recommend students who can be tutors
- have classes tour the T/LC; contact any staff member to arrange a tour.
- set up Study Groups to meet in the T/LC. See the T/LC Deltanet site for more information, and contact Sheilanthi Chandran to arrange recordkeeping and reports.
- make tutoring a required or extra credit assignment. Contact Sheilanthi Chandran to arrange recordkeeping and reports.
- T/LC can not provide reports on student attendance without prior arrangement, including submission of the appropriate Permission to Share Information forms signed by students. The forms are available at the T/LC DeltaNet site.
- have a Tutor for a Day in your classroom-- one of our staff can assist you for a day in the library, computer lab, or classroom when you need assistance in a group project or specialized instruction
The Teaching/Learning Center's Study Group Program provides a forum for students in a class to work together for studying and learning. A major goal of study groups is to empower students and help them be responsible for their own learning. Working together makes learning challenging, meaningful and enjoyable.
Faculty can participate in this program by:
- reading the Study Group Information for Faculty at the T/LC Deltanet site
- recommending a student Facilitator if desired
- meeting with the Tutor Coordinator and other faculty who use Study Groups
Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) is an instructional academic support model designed to promote graduation and retention by increasing pass rates in developmental courses which are at high risk. The SLA program currently covers ENG090, MTH092, and sections of MTH096 taught in conjunction with MTH092.
A Facilitator conducts out-of-class workshops which are available to all students in the class, but required for students who fall below a C+ average. Facilitators are degreed professionals or experienced student tutors. Time for the workshops is listed along with class time in the schedule book. Students know these expectations before choosing to enroll in a SLA course.
Faculty who teach developmental classes will be notified of the assigned Leader. You may also recommend or request particular leaders. Faculty are requested to:
- explain the SLA program in their syllabuses
- meet with their SLA Leaders and keep them informed of student progress and needs
- meet with the Tutoring Coordinator and other SLA faculty
- See the T/LC Deltanet site for more information
T/LC Online
Students have five ways to get help on-line with classes, coursework, study skills, and T/LC services. Online questions will be answered by the professional staff within 24 hours.
Learning Strategies Instruction
Instruction in learning strategies such as time management, test-taking, and problem-solving is available for individual students through walk-in tutoring and Internet links. T/LC staff can give presentations on learning strategies in your classroom. Just contact any staff member and tell us what topic(s) you'd like covered and how long a presentation you would like (10 minutes to an hour).
PLATO® Web Learning Network is a web-based instructional program with over 1400 hours of lessons in math, sciences, social sciences, and communication skills. Audio is available in many of the modules. Lessons and tests can be customized for classes and individual students. PLATO® is administered through the T/LC and accessible via the IInternet.
Faculty can use PLATO® as homework assignments, extra credit assignments, assessment tests, practice tests, or instruction.
