Course Description

Addresses safety in the use of oxy-fuel gas equipment and equipment set-up. Explores oxy-fuel welding and brazing of flat strips 1/8" or less in thickness, and cutting plate in laboratory experience. Intended for non-welding majors. (10-5)

Outcomes and Objectives

Understand the theory of the Oxy-fuel processes.

Objectives:

  • Realize the significance of this process in manufacturing and industry.
  • Discuss relationships with other welding and/or cutting processes.

Demonstrate appropriate safety practices and procedures.

Objectives:

  • Realize the value of the use of safety equipment.
  • Identify proper protective equipment.
  • Apply safety procedures in all laboratory activities.

Demonstrate appropriate equipment operation.

Objectives:

  • Realize the importance of proper equipment set-up.
  • Apply proper procedures when setting up equipment.

Develop, read, and follow a welding specification/procedure document.

Objectives:

  • Realize the importance of following the procedure.
  • Define and explain appropriate welding terms.
  • Apply the procedure when making a specific cut or weld.

Demonstrate proper techniques to complete cuts and welds on carbon steel material.

Objectives:

  • Realize the value of proper body positioning, visual factors, material prep and positioning, and tacking.
