Course Description

Assigns student volunteers to either community agencies providing cross-cultural experiences or to an international work experience. Provides support seminars dealing with structure and background knowledge of the particular country involved. (A minimum of 60 hours volunteer placement is required.) Credit may be earned in IHU 162 or SOC 162, but not both. (15-60)

Outcomes and Objectives

Explain the values, norms, and behaviors associated with American culture.

Objectives:

  • State aloud the values, norms, and behaviors associated with the American cultural experience in a 15-minute speech or conversation.

Identify an alternative cultural framework either in the United States or in a foreign country.

Objectives:

  • State aloud the values and norms associated with an alternative cultural framework in a 15-minute speech or conversation.

Apply knowledge within an on-site cross-cultural experience.

Objectives:

  • Write an analytical composition based on an on-site cross-cultural experience that compares American cultural norms and behaviors with the alternative cultural framework.
