Course Description

Develops competency in content and skills in college science classes and intended for students unsure of adequacy of preparation for college science. Includes use of scientific method, measurement practices in metrics, communicating and presenting scientific data, classification techniques, spatial relationships, and maps. Presents methods for improving science study skills, note taking, data recording and analysis. (Cannot be counted toward Natural Science or lab credit.) Does not earn credit toward graduation. Credit may be earned in SCI 099 or in SCI 100 but not both. (75-15)

Outcomes and Objectives

Recognize symptoms of science anxiety and employ appropriate methods to reduce\remove anxiety.

Demonstrate an understanding of how scientists communicate and competently communicate about scientific topics.

Objectives:

  • Explain the rationale for clear concise communication within the science disciplines.
  • Cite, in an appropriate format, the source of a scientific article.
  • Determine the audience for which a scientific article is written.
  • Utilize the library as an appropriate choice for science literary research.
  • Critically read material from a general science textbook.
  • Critically read a scientific article.
  • Effectively write a laboratory report using correct scientific format.
  • Clearly record observations and results.
  • Listen actively about scientific material.
  • Speak effectively about scientific material.
  • Make a presentation of experimental results.
  • Develop and interpret graphs and flow charts.

Demonstrate the ability to think critically.

  • Distinguish between simple correlation and cause-and-effect.

Demonstrate competency in using the metric system.

Objectives:

  • Explain the value of using the metric system in scientific investigations
  • Explain the relationships between the units of the metric system.
  • Make conversions between units within the metric system.
  • Accurately measure volume, mass and length using Sl units.
  • Solve word problems using the metric system.
  • Estimate metric quantities.
  • Convert english units to metric units and vice versa.

Demonstrate an ability to visualize three dimensional objects.

Objectives:

  • Cite instances when scientists use three dimensional visualizations.
  • Visualize two dimensional drawings as three dimensional objects.
  • Create three dimensional models from two dimensional visuals.

Demonstrate an understanding of how to study scientific material.

Objectives:

  • Recognize their predominant learning style.
  • Use coping strategies to facilitate learning when the style of delivery does not match their learning style.
  • Practice note taking skills.
  • Practice study skills.
  • Develop test taking strategies.
  • Work in a collaborative learning environment.

  • Correctly use various kinds of scientific equipment and metering devices.
