Course Description

Prerequisite: OAT 151 with a "C" (2.0) grade minimum. Studies effective verbal and nonverbal communication in business. Emphasizes audience reaction, logical organization, tone, clarity, and accuracy. Involves career information, the research process, and reporting. (45-0)

Outcomes and Objectives

Demonstrate the ability to function as an effective team member.

Objectives:

  • Discuss and display team development, team roles, dealing with conflict, and methods for reaching group decisions.
  • Use techniques for organizing team-based written and oral presentations.
  • Reflect on the effectiveness, interaction, and dynamics of the team.

Access, analyze, and utilize information.

Objectives:

  • Identify an information need.
  • Access electronic information utilizing electronic databases and Internet resources.
  • Analyze and evaluate the credibility of sources.
  • Evaluate and utilize the information for oral and written reports.

Demonstrate an understanding of the research process.

Objectives:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of primary and secondary research.
  • Apply primary and/or secondary research techniques.
  • Analyze and evaluate the data for use in reporting.
  • Develop a references page consisting of traditional and electronic sources for use in a business report.

Demonstrate knowledge of written reporting techniques commonly used in business.

Objectives:

  • Write a short report or proposal utilizing the results of primary and/or secondary research on a business-related topic.
  • Write a long report (in APA style) complete with preliminary and supplementary pages, appropriate graphics, and in-text citations.

Demonstrate knowledge of effective oral reporting techniques.

Objectives:

  • Plan presentations by determining the purpose and analyzing the audience.
  • Prepare presentations by collecting data and organizing it in a logical format.
  • Develop effective visual aids for presentations.
  • Deliver presentations in a professional manner.

Demonstrate knowledge of the process of entering the job market.

Objectives:

  • Explore employment resources available online and/or in Career Services.
  • Write a resume.
  • Write an application letter.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of effective interview techniques.
  • Write related employment messages.

Demonstrate professionalism appropriate for the workplace.

Objectives:

  • Participate in class.
  • Follow written and oral directions.
  • Complete and submit assignments on time.
  • Participate constructively in activities.
  • Display civility toward other class members and the instructor.
  • Demonstrate academic integrity.
