Course Description

Prerequisites: Prerequisites: READING LEVEL 2 and WRITING LEVEL 2 and MATH LEVEL 2.

Similar to Geography 222 but applied to the United States and Canada. (45-0)

Outcomes and Objectives

Be acquainted with knowledge of the basic principles of the regional geographic approach to the study of the diverse human world.

Objectives:

  • Define the terms REALM and REGION, and distinguish the difference between them.
  • Define and apply the concepts of SPATIAL INTERACTION and AREAL DIFFERENTIATION.
  • Synthesize, evaluate, analyze, compare, categorize and generalize from information from multiple sources, presented in various formats, (text, maps, tables, graphs, diagrams, visuals) to answer geographic questions.
  • Postulate the impact of real or hypothetical phenomenon on regional features between and within geographically identifiable places.
  • To identify, examine, evaluate and project causal relationships between and within geographical features.
  • Name and locate the North American realm's ten REGIONS on a map of North America.
  • List at least two major significant identifying characteristics for each of the ten North American component regions.

Develop a basic appreciation for, and comprehension of, the past, current and possible future areal patterns and spatial interactions that characterize the FRENCH CANADA REGION.

  • Locate selected major physical features of the region on a map.
  • Describe at least four significant cultural characteristics of the region.
  • Describe and analyze significant economic characteristics of the region.
  • Identify and discuss significant demographic characteristics of the region.

  • Assess at least two current or future problems that may internally and/or externally affect the region.
  • Assess at least two current or potential advantages each selected region enjoy.
  • Analyze and evaluate past, current and possible future interrelationships of items 1-8 above from a within the region perspective, applying regionally appropriate concepts such as centripetal and centrifugal forces, regional morphology, hinge function or historical inertia.
  • Analyze and evaluate past, current and possible future interrelationships of items 1-9 above from a global between regions and realms perspective using appropriate concepts such as functional specialization, intervening opportunity, supranationalism, culture hearths or irredentism.
