Course Description

Prerequisite: MTH 119 or MTH 119A or appropriate assessment scores. Studies DC and AC circuit fundamentals including a general introduction to industrial control concepts. (30-30)

Outcomes and Objectives

Understand electrical safety.

Objectives:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic electrical safety techniques

Make electrical measurements.

Objectives:

  • Measure ac and dc current and voltage
  • Measure electrical resistance
  • Determine electrical continuity

Understand basic electrical circuits.

Objectives:

  • Analyze ac and dc series, parallel, combined series-parallel and bridge circuits
  • Fabricate ac and dc series, parallel, combined series-parallel and bridge circuits
  • Troubleshoot ac and dc series, parallel, combined series-parallel and bridge circuits

Understand transformer and electric motor principles.

Objectives:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of single phase and three phase transformers
  • Demonstrate an understanding of dc motors
  • Demonstrate an understanding of single phase and three phase ac motors

Outcome 5 Understand the electrical control of machines.

Objectives:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of proper wire size and color
  • Demonstrate an understanding of electrical position sensors
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic electrical control devices: switch, timer, electromechanical relay, solid-state relay, contactor and motor starter
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the programmable control of machines
  • Demonstrate an understanding of electrical machine control wiring diagrams
