Course Description

Prerequisite: READING LEVEL 3 and WRITING LEVEL 3 and OAT 170 with a "C" (2.0) grade minimum or equivalent touch typing and computer background. Introduces Microsoft Word software. Teaches how to create, format, save, retrieve, edit, and print documents. (15-0)

Outcomes and Objectives

Use the components of the Word window.

Objectives:

  • Use the Office button for file operations and modifying Microsoft Word options.
  • Apply features found in groups with the tabs on the ribbon.
  • Use and modify the Quick Access toolbar.
  • Use screen tips and shortcut menus.
  • Display and interpret nonprinting characters.
  • Use the scroll bar.
  • Use the rulers.
  • Use and modify the status bar.
  • Recognize and use viewing buttons.

Use basic document processing operations.

Objectives:

  • Navigate through the document with the keyboard and the mouse.
  • Use common keyboard shortcuts for file operations and formatting.
  • Insert and delete text.
  • Select text with the keyboard and the mouse.
  • Use undo and redo.
  • Use cut, copy, and paste operations.
  • Use folders for file management.
  • Manage files with save, print, open, close, and "save as."
  • Find and replace text.

Use basic formatting of documents.

Objectives:

  • Recognize program defaults.
  • Use word wrap.
  • Use caps lock, bold, underline, and italics.
  • Change font size and style and apply font effects.
  • Use styles for formatting documents.
  • Change text alignments.
  • Set and use tabs, change tab types, and delete tabs.
  • Change line spacing.
  • Change margins and indents.
  • Insert page breaks.
  • Apply bullets and numbers to paragraphs.
  • Apply borders and shading to paragraphs.

Demonstrate the use of electronic tools to improve the quality of the document.

Objectives:

  • Use the Help feature.
  • Use and modify the spell checker.
  • Use and modify the grammar checker.
  • Use and modify Auto Correct options.
