Course Description

Prerequisites: Prerequisites: READING LEVEL 3 and WRITING LEVEL 3.

Identifies the impact of social media on interpersonal relationships. Explores communication through different types of social media. Applies communication theory to analysis of current social media outlets. (45-0)

Outcomes and Objectives

Identify the guiding principles of social media in interpersonal contexts.

Objectives:

  • Define social media.
  • Recognize differences between old media, new media, social media, and new media.
  • Examine the impact of social media on communication.

Analyze the impact of different types of social media on communication.

Objectives:

  • Examine the role of online communities (e.g., Facebook) in interpersonal contexts.
  • Examine the role of immediate limited-text communication (e.g., Twitter) in interpersonal contexts.
  • Examine the role of viral videos (e.g., YouTube) in interpersonal and educational contexts.
  • Examine the role of online encyclopedias (e.g., Wikipedia) in interpersonal and educational contexts.
  • Examine the role of blogging in interpersonal contexts.
  • Identify how social media norms and rules impact communication.

Evaluate the dark side of social media.

  • Identify negative trends in social media.
  • Examine the negative impact of social media on interpersonal relationships and society.
