General Science Index
Delta College Library
Entry #5 Using Popular
PLEASE SCROLL DOWN THE PAGE
EBSCO's General Science computer database (index) will lead you to some scholarly science articles AND popular science magazine articles such as those found in Discover, Science News, and Scientific American. Some of the articles are full-text (the entire text of the article), but some records in General Science Index are just a citation and abstract. Delta Library has some popular science magazines on the shelves, such as Discover and Science News, so if the article is not full-text within the database then you can see if the magazine is on the periodical shelves.
The Library's magazine and journal web page is located at: http://www.delta.edu/llic/libraryresearch/journalsandmagazines.aspx.
Once you access this web page, you will need to click on the EBSCO ON-campus link if you are accessing EBSCO from ON CAMPUS OR you will need to click on the EBSCO OFF-campus link if you are accessing EBSCO from OFF CAMPUS. These are two DIFFERENT links. OFF-campus access requires you to use your Delta College username and password.
You will see a long list of databases that will provide records or full-text (entire) articles based on the subject of the database. EBSCO allows you to search one database at at time OR more than one database at a time. For this PART of the assignment, we will scroll down the screen to click on "General Science Full Text."
SCROLL DOWN THE SCREEN IN ORDER TO CLICK THE "General Science Full Text" LINK.
1. Type your keywords within the search box.
2. Within the next search box down, type the title of the magazine or journal.
3. To the RIGHT of this search box is another search box. You need to click on the down arrow to select "SO Journal Name" within the search box so that the computer will search for articles within the journal (Source) by the name of "science news."
THIS IS WHAT THE SCREEN SHOULD LOOK LIKE for asking the computer to search for articles about stem cells within the publication "Science News." CLICK on the "Search" button and the computer will start the search.
STEP FOUR: Citations
You will presented with a long list of citations (title of the article, author, title of the magazine, publication date, volume number, issue number and pages).
Scroll down the page or go to the next page in order to find a citation that looks of interest to you.
Click on the highlighted title (link) of the article.
You are almost there. You are presented with a screen that has the citation and abstract (summary of the article).
SCROLL DOWN THE SCREEN IN ORDER TO VIEW THE FULL-TEXT OF THE ARTICLE IF THE FULL-TEXT IS AVAILABLE.
IF the magazine is not full-text then the citation will lead you to the magazine shelf where you can find this article in the October 22, 2011 issue of Science News. You will find that the article starts on page 26.
