Exploring Our Humanity!

The Humanities Learning Center at Delta College offers students entering grades 6-9 a unique and challenging summer learning experience on the main Delta College campus. Students will meet Monday-Thursday, July 15-18, at 8:45am and move through three class sessions throughout the day, ending at 4pm. Classes are taught by members of Delta College’s innovative faculty and introduce students to a variety of humanities and related disciplines. All courses share a common underlying theme that demonstrates the importance of civility to a fully functional society. Students will have half hour breaks between courses and are invited to bring a lunch or try some of the lunch choices available for purchase in our Red Brix Café.

Digital Storytelling

Think digital publishing is just putting words online?  Find out what more is possible.  In this workshop, you'll learn how to put together words, images, and sounds to create a multimedia poem that can be uploaded to YouTube.

The Black Death and Other Medieval Disasters
Taught by L. Dull
What happens when 2 out of 3 people around you have died horrible deaths from a plague that no one fully understands? How does society respond? In this course you will explore primary historical sources to hear voices and see images from the past communicate to us about their experiences of what happens to civility and civilization when the ultimate disaster strikes.

Quest for the Best!

In this session we will discover how the fun folks at Walt Disney World, national parks, and even zoos develop programs for today’s youth that encourage courteous behavior and politeness. Attendees of this workshop will create personal codes of ethics, learn the mentoring process and other practices that increase their enthusiasm for civility.

Studio Production
Taught by D. Wright
Have you always wanted to create your own television show? In this course, Danielle will introduce you to how a television studio operates including running cameras, audio, lighting, set design, show concepts, and switching/directing. You will have the opportunity to apply these skills to create your own “mini show” that will be taped utilizing the set designed by Delta College students.

Weihnachten in Juli (Christmas in July)
It has been said that Germans do Christmas better than any other country in the world, so we will celebrate a German Christmas in July. Students will learn to greet each other and learn about each other’s interests. We will learn about the 6 December, called Sankt Nikolaus Tag, and other Christmas customs of German-speaking countries.

Understanding Our Environment: A Fusion of Biology and Chemistry Explorations
Taught by M. Garlick
You will study the bio-chemistry of the natural environment and will work in laboratories as well as outdoors to explore plant development and distribution, environmental sampling, insects, ethical choices, chemistry in natural waters, air pollution, and a survey of chemical reactions. Be sure to wear long pants and sturdy closed-toe shoes and bring a water bottle and bug spray as we will go into the wilds of Delta’s backyard.

Philosophy’s Big Ideas: The Perennial Questions of Philosophy
Taught by K. Wolf
Do humans have free will? What makes a society just? What is the relationship between science and religion? What is beauty? What is the meaning of life? Students will be introduced to these and other perennial philosophical questions, and will sharpen their critical thinking skills by “doing” philosophy, that is, by reading works of philosophy, engaging in philosophical discussions and debates, and writing about philosophy in a variety of formats.

Character in Cinema
Taught by R. Wilson
This course will focus on heroes and anti-heroes and how both are reflected through different genres of film at different points in film history. We will be watching and discussing classic genres, such as silent films and westerns, as well as more modern genres such as science fiction and fantasy. Expect to compare and contrast historical characters with more recent characters, noting common values and behaviors. Whole films and portions of films will be screened and discussed.
