A Free Intro to Sailing Fundamentals

The first evening of Sailing Fundamentals is open free of charge to any adults interested in getting started in sailing. The emphasis in this evening will be safety equipment and basic sailing techniques. Delta Main Campus

Sailing Fundamentals

If you are the person that has done some sailing or even if you have never done any sailing, this class filled with hints, suggestions, and tips will help to make your on the water experiences more enjoyable and safe. You will learn the best way to handle the various situations that arise on the water. Not only will the boat skipper benefit, but so will crew members wishing to improve their ability to contribute to boat operation.

You will be exposed to some basic sailing theory and nomenclature then advance through sailing techniques, sail trim, sailboat safety, man overboard drill, rope types, knots, docklines, come about, gybe, rules of the road, dock approaches and departure under sail, required equipment, points of sail, grounding and anchoring.

The instructor has over 35 years of sailing instruction experience in boats from dinghy to 65 footers and holds a 100 Ton Coast Guard License. This background enables the instructor to relate many interesting stories of personal experiences that are used to illustrate important points dealing with sailboats and sailboat handling. This experience also enables the instructor to forewarn you about the most common mistakes made by both captain and crew.

This class will be taught with many visual aids including video segments, large 8 foot model sailboat, wind machine, knot board, and lots of boating equipment. It is rare to see attention lapse in this fast pace presentation. Applause is the norm at the completion of this six session course.
