Celestial Navigation
This 6-session class is intended for those who wish to learn the ultimate backup to often faltering electronic navigation and for those who might get satisfaction finding position at sea using similar tools and sighting the same sun, moon, and stars as did the great navigators of history.
The student will start by becoming familiar with use of the sextant. The emphasis throughout will be on learning procedures while theory and historical development will be de-emphasized.
Some of the topics covered are sextant, nautical almanac, H.O. 249, sun, moon, planet and star sights, plotting the line of position, and latitude by noon sights and Polaris. Sextants will be provided by the instructor. If you have access to a sexant, please bring it to class.
The instructor, Larry Maples, is a Coast Guard Licensed Captain and the author of the workbook used in this class.
