Medical insurance billing professionals work for doctors, hospitals and insurance companies. They complete the paperwork that is submitted to insurance companies on behalf of patients.

This course teaches the medical insurance and billing concepts: basic diagnostic and procedure coding, basic insurance concepts and terminology used by health insurance carriers, how to complete claim forms for commercial insurance companies including Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan, Medicare and Medicaid, including a hands-on computer lab that will provide students to work with and navigate the insurance billing software.

The Medical Insurance Billing program has proven to be successful in preparing students to obtain certifications such as: Certified Medical Biller (CMB), Certified Medical Billing Specialist (CMBS), Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist (CMRS) through American Medical Billing Association or Medical Association of Billers and Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist - Physician Based (CCS-P) through American Health and Information Management Association. Students who successfully complete this program will receive a certificate from Delta College. $10.60 Average Starting Wages. What is a Medical Insurance Biller and Coder?

Medical Insurance Billers are responsible for collecting, posting, managing account payments, submitting claims and following up with insurance companies.  They prepare and submit clean claims to various insurance companies either electronically or by paper. They also answer questions from patients, clerical staff and insurance companies.

 

What kind of certification will I receive?

After successful completion of the program, you will be awarded a certificate from Delta College.

 

Environmental/Working Conditions

Normal office environment. Occasional overtime may be required and/or hours may be shortened as business needs dictate. This requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment. Manual dexterity needed for using a calculator and computer keyboard.

 

Prerequisites

1.) Admission

Students must go through Admission to Delta College. There are several ways to apply to Delta College. For an admissions application, office hours and other important information please visit the Admissions Office website.

2.) You may apply manually by printing the application, filling it out and mailing it, along with the $20 application fee, to the Admissions Office.
3.) You may apply in person with a printed application or stop by the Admissions Office and pick-up the application. Your application will be processed while you are at the college and you will receive your student number.
4.) You may complete the printed application and then fax it to (989) 667-2202. If faxing an application, contact the Admissions Office with payment information.*

2.)   HSC-105 Medical Terminology (grade C or above) prior to registration

This course develops a basic understanding of the spelling and meaning of commonly used prefixes, suffixes, and word roots, and their combining forms. Comprehension of these word parts will allow proper use of words for the development of professional language use in the allied health professions. You may also complete the HSC-105 Medical Terminology Course through Credit-By-Exam

The Delta College Testing Center (A133) offers Credit-By-Exam (CBE) for students who want to earn credit or waive a course. Objective/information sheets are available online. Students must register and pay exam fee to schedule an appointment. Medical Terminology Information:  Course Number: HSC 105; Course Title: Medical Terminology; Credits: 2; Time Allowed: 1 Hour

  • You may not be in the course and take credit-by-exam, for that course, at the same time.
  • Typically results take a minimum of two (2) to four (4) weeks. ENG111 results may take eight (8) weeks.
  • You will not receive a grade when you utilize credit-by-exam; only the credit is posted on your transcript.
  • Credit achieved may not transfer to other colleges and universities.

3.)   Ability to type at least 40wpm accurately

4.) High School Diploma or GED® Test Credential

It is our recommendation that students who meet the above prerequisites have also attained a high school diploma or GED® test credential (not a high school certificate of completion) prior to participation and/or completion of this program. This recommendation is based on overall student success and hiring standards of many employers in the Great Lakes Bay Region.
